Should I have life insurance?

A 30-second decision tree

You probably need life insurance if…

  • Someone depends on your income (spouse, children, parents)
  • You have a mortgage you couldn't pay off from savings
  • You co-signed loans your family would inherit
  • You're a business owner with key-person or buy-sell exposure
  • You want to leave a legacy / equalise an estate / fund a charity

You may not need it (yet) if…

  • You're single, no dependants, no debt
  • Your estate already covers final expenses and tax
  • You have sufficient self-insured assets (HNW)

Even then, applying young locks in low rates while you're insurable. Many people buy a small term policy in their 20s and convert later.

Common questions

Life insurance FAQ

A common rule of thumb is 10–12× your annual income, plus enough to clear your mortgage and fund children's education. Our needs assessment walks through your actual situation, income replacement, debts, dependants' future expenses, and gives a personalised number.
Term is right for most people most of the time: lowest cost per dollar of cover, matches a temporary need (mortgage, kids growing up). Whole life is right when the need is permanent (estate equalisation, business succession, lifelong dependant). Your advisor explains the trade-offs.
Most carriers accept simplified-issue applications up to $1M for healthy applicants under 50, no medical required, just health questions. Larger amounts or older ages typically require a paramedical exam (blood, urine, vitals). The advisor sets expectations before you apply.
Yes, some health conditions, lifestyle factors, or financial situations may lead to higher premiums (rated) or declined applications. We pre-screen with you before submitting so we can choose the carrier with the most favourable underwriting for your profile.
We earn a commission from the carrier when a policy is placed. There are no fees to you, and we disclose the commission on every recommendation before you apply. Full disclosure on our Disclosure page.
