Three core coverages

What auto insurance actually covers

Liability

Mandatory in every province. Pays for damage and injury you cause to others. Most provinces require $200K minimum; we recommend $1M–$2M because lawsuits don't cap at the minimum.

Collision

Pays to repair your vehicle after a collision regardless of fault. Optional but typically required by lenders/leases. Choose a deductible ($500/$1,000/$2,500), higher deductible = lower premium.

Comprehensive

Covers theft, vandalism, hail, fire, falling objects, wildlife collisions, glass breakage. Optional but cheap relative to the loss it covers.

Endorsements worth considering

OPCF 20a / accident benefits topup

The default accident-benefits limits in most provinces are low. Topping up to $1M medical/rehab and $1,000/week income replacement closes a serious gap for a small premium.

OPCF 27 / non-owned auto

Cover when you drive a rental or borrowed car. Cheaper than buying it at the rental counter and applies to every rental for the year.

OPCF 43 / waiver of depreciation

Pays for a new vehicle if yours is written off within the first 24–48 months. Especially valuable if you bought rather than leased.

Loss of use

Pays for a rental while your vehicle is being repaired or replaced. Capped at $50–$75/day for 30 days, typically.

Common questions

Auto insurance FAQ

The provincial minimum (usually $200K in Ontario) is dangerously low. Most advisors recommend $1M–$2M because court awards routinely exceed the minimum. The premium difference between $200K and $2M is usually $80–$160/year, cheap insurance against losing your house.
Rule of thumb: if your annual collision premium exceeds 10% of the car's value, consider dropping it. The math flips around year 7–10 of ownership for typical vehicles.
Yes, unless you have accident forgiveness. Some carriers offer it automatically after 5–6 claim-free years; others sell it as a rider. Worth $30–$60/year for first-time forgiveness if you don't have it.
Auto premiums are heavily driven by claim experience at the postal-code level, theft, collision frequency, repair costs. Even moving 2km can shift your premium 10–25%.
